Analysis Of Basin Sediment Characteristics And Its Relationship With Current Conditions At Kaisomaru Beach, Dumbo Raya District, Gorontalo City

Abstract

This research was conducted at Kaisomaru Beach, Dumbo Raya District, Gorontalo City, on May 6, 2026, with the aim of analyzing the characteristics of bottom sediments and their relationship to current conditions and aquatic environmental parameters. Sampling was conducted at three stations using field surveys and laboratory analysis methods to determine the grain size composition and density of the sediments, as well as measuring current speed, temperature, salinity, acidity, and water clarity. The results showed that the sediment was dominated by coarse sand fractions whose percentage increased from 44% at Station 1, to 63% at Station 2, and reached 83% at Station 3, while the medium sand fraction decreased successively and fine sand was only found in small amounts at Station 1. Current velocity varied between 0.008 m/s to 0.028 m/s with the highest value at Station 2, and sediment density ranged from 219.4 g/cm³ to 658 g/cm³ where the highest value was found at Station 2. There was a close proportional relationship between current strength and water temperature with sediment grain size; the higher the hydrodynamic energy, the coarser the sediment left behind because fine material was transported away, which confirmed that the sediment distribution pattern in this area was completely controlled by the dynamics of water physics and functioned as a deposition area for coarse to medium-sized material.
